Celina sets new space for seniors
BY ALEX REECE
The opening of the Ralph O’Dell Senior Center is the beginning of a new chapter for its members and the Celina community, ocials said. “It’s an investment in the future,” Mayor Ryan Tubbs said. “It’s honoring the people who are part of our past and giving them something nice to cherish for the future.” Seniors took every opportunity they had to explore the new space ahead of its ocial grand opening in early December with events including woodworking and low-impact workout classes. “[The seniors] love it,” Senior Center Coordinator Dani Mayeld said. “We don’t know what to do with all this space.” The push for a new space came from Celina’s recent population growth, including its senior popu- lation, Tubbs said. The new center oers more than double the space with activities available. “These ... nearly 5,000 square feet that we dedicate today oered to this worthy and honorable community within our community,” Tubbs said at the Dec. 6 opening.
McKinney resident Howard Graham carves wood at Celina’s Ralph O’Dell Senior Center on Nov. 28. The center is open to members and nonmembers, and currently free for residents and nonresidents.

The number of students in the district acquir- ing English has increased over 350% during the past five school years, Director of Language Programs Alexis King said during a Nov. 13 board meeting. Independent-living communities cater to older adults with limited care needs. Most include amenities, such as fitness programs, housekeeping and communal meals. Assisted-living communities specialize in providing care and supervision. These facilities frequently offer a full range of amenities as well as limited medical assistance. Memory care facilities specialize in providing care to seniors with Alzheimer’s, dementia and other cognitive issues. Staff members are trained to help residents manage these diseases. Hospice care is intended to relieve symptoms and suffering associated with a terminal illness in those who have been given six months or less to live. The patient must choose to forgo further curative treatment. Nursing home/skilled nursing facilities provide care to those with illnesses or mental conditions requiring full- time monitoring and medical care.

Celina sets new space for seniors From the cover
BY ALEX REECE
How we got here
In a nutshell
While the new center opened in early December, its downtown predecessor opened nearly 40 years ago, and the seniors have outgrown it, Webb said. The downtown senior center oered a place for seniors to go, resident Donna Walker said. Walker said she didn’t venture out much because of the pandemic before visiting the original center in April. The senior center was about 1,800 square feet, Parks and Recreation Director Cody Webb said. The new center is more than double that, he said. “[The original center] just got to be too tight in there for [the seniors],” Webb said. “It became a safety issue with them being in there, being that compact and not being able to move and ex.”
Celina’s population has grown in recent years including its senior population, which has grown by 122.22% from 2010 to 2022, according to US Census data. “Celina has grown, and so has our aging population and their need for a well-deserved, expanded facility,” Tubbs said. The center has around 50 ocial members, 30 of whom show up consistently, Mayeld said. It is free to be a member, but center sta plan to introduce fees in the future, Mayeld said.

Diving deeper
Senior center timeline
Work on the Ralph O’Dell Senior Center, located at 410 E. Main St., ocially began in early 2022 and has taken roughly 18 months and $3.2 million to get where it is now, Tubbs said. “[The center] is a great amenity for our seniors,” Tubbs said. “ ... The old center … wasn’t worth it to even renovate it in [the city’s] long-term plans because eventually the old senior center as well as city hall will come down in the next three to ve years when our future government center is built.” The idea to name the new center for resident Ralph O’Dell, longtime member and coordinator at the senior center, came directly from the other seniors, Webb said. The center is nestled inside a former eld house at Ousley Park, a roughly 30-acre city project expected to break ground in 2025. “This is just a greater project in the grand vision for how Ousley Park will develop,” Tubbs said

Going forward
"It’s an investment in the future. It’s honoring the people who are part of our past and giving them something nice to cherish for the future.” MAYOR RYAN TUBBS
The additional thousands of square feet available for seniors at the center could encourage more attendees, Mayeld said. One specic upgrade is the 40-space parking lot instead of the on-street parking at the original center, Tubbs said. Other amenities include a larger indoor gym area, a new kitchen, additional meeting space and more.
The Ralph O’Dell Senior Center will hopefully be a haven for the entire community, Webb said. It is open to anyone and residency in Celina is not required. “It’s not just the senior center,’” he said. “We want this to be an all-inclusive place where you can come and hang out.”

The Fit Pelvis aims to improve patients’ quality of life When Katy Girlinghouse opened The Fit Pelvis in 2020, and a location in Prosper in 2022, she did so to ll a void as well as provide healing to others like what she experienced herself.
one in Sherman in May. Services provided relate to pelvic health such as bladder problems, leakage, diculty emptying bladder, constipation, bowel leakage, pain with sex, abdominal, pelvic and hip pain, and anything pregnancy related. The specics Although most of their patients are women, Girlinghouse said they also treat men. “I see men for pain—pain with sitting, pain with standing,” she said. “They have pain in their groin, sometimes testicular pain, or rectal pain.” Girlinghouse employees two physical therapists, a yoga coach and health coach. Most of their patients are residents whose ages range from 24 to 40 years old. “They are parents who want to feel good and be active with their families,” she said. “They’re tired of missing out on things like jumping on the trampoline or running because of the leaking or pain they are having.” She said she feels successful when her physical therapists tell her about a breakthrough their patient experienced. “They are surprised at how quickly they get better,” Girlinghouse said. “People expect it to take weeks and weeks to feel better, but a lot of our patients in the rst one to two weeks start seeing changes and notice how much better they feel that fast.”
“I was diagnosed with endometriosis and had two surgeries for it, and the pain was not getting better,” she said. “I started working on some physi- cal therapy things for it, and my pain went away. That was helpful for me. I have two kids, so I saw the leaking piece, the pain in pregnancy piece—I’ve experienced all those things.” While working as a physical therapist for ve years, she repeatedly saw women who had back and hip pain but were not getting better with normal physical therapy treatments. “I found there was a need where women could get help with leaking, pain during pregnancy and postpartum,” Girlinghouse said. “Too many women are told pelvic pain is normal and you should just deal with it or take some medication. There are other options out there for them.” The backstory Although she opened her practice in April 2020, she didn’t open her McKinney oce until May 2021. “I started with home visits,” she said. “As I grew and got busier, I didn’t have as much time to travel to see as many people—you can only drive so far in one day—so I opened this oce.” She chose to launch her practice in McKinney because she lives a mile away. She opened a second location in Prosper in 2022 and another
