MCKINNEY ISD The board of trustees outlined the search process for the district’s next superintendent during a special meeting Dec. 6. MISD Superintendent Rick McDaniel announced Dec. 2 his intention to retire at the end of the 2022-23 school year after almost eight years in the position. McDaniel’s education career spans more than 35 years. Board President Amy Dankel said she recommended, to be the most fair to all candidates, each of the board members should be present during the interviews, and should check their individual calendars and let her know if there are any dates in the spring where they would not be able to conduct an interview. Board Member Philip Hassler noted this was his rst time to go through the process of nding a new superintendent and said he wanted to make sure the process was as “trans- parent and communicative” as possible. “[I want to] ensure that we have ... a site dedicated specically on our webpage to make sure the public knows about what’s going on, and secondly, that we’re getting community input and feedback,” Hassler said. To that end, in December the district obtained an outside rm to assist with the search process. The rm will facilitate opportunities for community input on the characteristics desired in the new superintendent, according to a district news release. The news release outlined a timeline of next steps and said the district’s goal is to have a candidate identi- ed and announced by Feb. 20. “I know in previous searches we have had a third party, and they have helped in terms of organization,” Hassler said. “Each one of us have responsibilities outside of the board, so we’re not able to manage it in a way that would maybe be as eective as opposed to partnering with a third party.” Dankel also suggested creating focus groups in which each board member would ask parents, community mem- bers and sta if they would be interested in being part of these small groups. “It’s not like they interview or even sit in on interviews or even see a list of people we’re interviewing,” Dankel said. “The idea is that they would give input in a small-group setting on characteristics that we as board members individ- ually feel are necessary in our next leader.” In a letter to district families and sta, Dankel said the

McKinney ISD plans for 2023-24 shift in attendance zones With the opening of Frazier Elementary School later this year, McKinney ISD proposed attendance zone changes for the 2023-24 school year during the board of trustees meeting Dec. 13. Ruth and Harold Frazier Elementary is a brand-new facility that will be located at the intersection of Lady Bird Drive and Blackwater Bay Cove in north McKinney. It was proposed that Frazier’s zone would be the portion of the Press Elementary zone north of Bloomdale Road and west of US 75. Press has one of the largest elementary zones in the district. All other portions of the Press attendance zone will remain unchanged, and no other zones are aected.

search rm will facilitate several opportunities for stake- holder input, including “a series of focus groups, community meetings and surveys.” Dankel said an interim superintendent would only be named if a new superintendent was not in place by the time McDaniel’s contract expired and he retired. Texas law states the nal candidate for a district superin- tendent is known as a “lone nalist,” and requires 21 days to elapse following the announcement before the new leader can be hired. After that 21-day waiting period, the district’s goal is to approve an employment contract and introduce McKinney ISD’s next superintendent in late March. More information about the superintendent search and a survey to develop a prole for the new superintendent is available online at www.mckinneyisd.net/about-misd/ superintendent-search.
