The project stems from a 2018 bond election Tarrant County vot- ers approved with 82% of the vote. Once completed, the project will have breathed new life into the JPS Hospital’s main campus and created a new hospital complex adjacent to its current location to help better care for patients needing mental health services. “With this new psychiatric emer- gency center, JPS will be able to redene our points of men- tal and behavioral health access and support the growing health care needs in Tarrant County,” JPS President and CEO Dr. Karen Duncan said during the center’s groundbreaking ceremony Oct. 26. The hospital system increasing its access to care comes as hospi- tals have little capacity for men- tal health patients and the region CONTINUED ON 20 BY HANNAH JOHNSON

GM/EDITOR NOTE
CORRECTION: Volume 13, Issue 2 In a story on the cover titled “New leader needed for Tarrant Appraisal Board,” a quote was misattributed and was actually said by Tarrant Appraisal District Chief Appraiser Jeff Law. FROM CODY: We are in the middle of a handful of special sections, starting with the Health Care Edition. There are a lot of issues we could’ve covered here, but we went with mental health and the impact a new mental health hospital in the JPS Health Network means to area residents. The Tarrant County Commissioners Court recently changed a list of crimes that people could avoid going to jail for and get help at a mental hospital facility instead. Health care experts say that is a great first step to address what is an area in need. Read about it on Pages 20-21. Cody Thorn, EDITOR FROM LEXI: Summer is here and vacations have begun. Before you head out, I encourage you to sign up for our daily newsletter called CI Morning Impact. You can sign up by going to communityimpact.com/newsletter to get daily updates and breaking news delivered right to your inbox so you don't miss a thing. Wishing you a great summer! What’s your favorite memory working for CI? LL: Day two of the Plano paper hitting homes for the first time ... I sat at a temporary desk in our new DFW headquarters—we had just moved in—and took phone calls and fielded emails for eight hours straight. People had just received us for the first time and were excited to share feedback and ask questions. It was clear we had a bright future here! Days like that are repeated, in some form, every time we enter a new community, and it’s energizing and rewarding for our team after all the hard work that goes into growth.
How do you spend your free time in the area? LL: It’s changed over the years as my husband and I age. We used to go out almost every weekend to hear live local music at all the fun venues around town. Nowadays it’s youth sports fields and children’s theater with the kids. We’re sporty and artsy, and DFW has so much to offer.
Aside from Community Impact, what have you read recently? LL: I’ve leaned into podcasts. Anything by Malcolm Gladwell or Adam Grant is on my “must listen to” list. Email newsletters are booming for CI; why should readers subscribe? LL: Who doesn’t want to be the smartest and most informed person in their neighborhood?! We hear from our subscribers that the Morning Impact’s quick, simple content pieces fuel their day with awareness. The emails are really useful and help them feel connected.

Trinity Metro is leading Texas tran- sit agencies in regard to recovered ridership levels since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020. President and CEO Richard Andreski provided an update on Trinity Metro to Grape- vine City Council on May 2. Trinity Metro is a transportation authority that provides service to the city of Fort Worth and surrounding suburbs of the Dallas-Fort Worth met- ropolitan area. Its services include buses; the Trinity Railway Express; TEXRail; Access, which provides service to those with disabilities; and the rideshare service Zipzone. What happened: Andreski cited TEXRail’s ridership levels, upcoming rail extensions and new programs as successes for the transit agency. • Ridership was 89% recovered in February 2023 compared to February 2020. • TEXRail sees 74% growth annually in ridership. In four years and a few months, Andreski said TEXRail has

Jellico Circle Road Work The city of Southlake and Tarrant County will perform road work on Jel- lico Circle. Two inches of a concrete mix will be placed on the surface after it is grounded down to the base layer in a process called wedge milling. Southlake will pay for the cost of the materials and delivery fees as well as half of the fuel cost for Tarrant County, perform the milling and put stripes on the road. The county will supply labor and heavy equipment for the work. Timeline: June-July Cost: $126,420 Funding source: City of Southlake Capital improvement program

DFW’s station at Terminal D is No. 1, Andreski said. • On TEXRail, 23% of riders begin and end their ride in Grapevine. • 72,000 bikes were rented as part of Fort Worth’s bike share program. • What they are saying : “Ridership declined signicantly during COVID[-19], and I’m pleased to say
we’re almost back to 100%, and we expect to be back to 100% of our ridership by the end of this year,” Andreski said. “That’s a great and heartening trend.” Going forward: Trinity Metro’s rail extension and electric bike share pro- gram are new and upcoming services Andreski highlighted. • A program is coming to upgrade Trinity Railway Express.
