Population and Survey Analysts, a Texas-based research organization, released preliminary results from its 2018 study of Conroe ISD in December, projecting future student enrollment growth. ON THE ENROLLMENT RISE

Conroe ISD to add 13,500 more students by 2028 EDUCATION BY HANNAH ZEDAKER Over the next decade, Conroe ISD is expected to add more than 13,500 students to its enrollment, according to a recent demographics study conducted by the Population and Survey Analysts. PASA is a research organization that assists Texas school districts in long-range planning by projecting future student enrollment based on a variety of fac- tors, including housing and economic trends. Deputy Superintendent Chris Hines presented an overview of the study during the CISD board of trustees meeting Dec. 18. The study compared the demograph- ics of CISD’s population to that of the Greater Houston area, broke down growth annually until 2028, and examined which high schools should expect increasing and decreasing student populations. According to the study, by 2028, CISD is expected to reach 76,560 students—a 19 percent increase from the start of the 2018-19 school year, which reported an enrollment of 63,014 students. “That’s one of the themes [in this study]—students are coming,” Hines said. “We’re going to continue to grow— it’s not stopping yet.” PASA’s study also included demographics of the CISD area compared to the Greater Houston area, which showed that CISD has a as a slightly higher student-age population than the Greater Houston area. The study also revealed that CISD has a lower eco- nomically disadvantaged student population than the Greater Houston area, as well as a higher percentage of students who pass the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness. The study showed growth trends within the district. Over the next decade, while the Conroe High School feeder zone is expected to add more than 2,500 students, The Woodlands High School feeder zone is expected to lose more than 700 students, according to the study. CISD Director of Communications Sarah Blakelock said the projected decreased enrollment will alleviate over- crowding at TWHS, as the campus currently relies on portable buildings to accommodate students. CISD officials said more comprehensive report of the study will be presented at the Jan. 15 board meeting.
