BUSINESS FEATURE MyndWorks Psychiatry Mental health nurse practitioner says business is one of a kind M ynd Works, a psychiatric business in West Lake Hills, is using a breakthrough treatment to provide relief to patients experiencing anxiety and depression. The three-step treatment, or the “triad,” combines clinical expertise with the latest psychiatric science to identify the most advantageous treatment plan, according to Kathie Bolles, founder of Mynd Works. The business uses science and genetics to deter- mine the right dosage of medicine for each patient. According to Bolles, a board-certied psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner for 30 years, it provides positive steps forward, and many of her patients are in remission. “There are a lot of people out there who are frustrated. They have been on antidepressants, and they haven’t really gotten well,” Bolles said. “Depression runs in my family, and I have been depressed for long periods of time. This is what got me well,” Bolles said. With an undergraduate degree in nursing, Bolles received a master’s in psychology from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio in 1992 and a master’s in nursing from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2015. She is certied to prescribe medi- cation and provide psychotherapy and coaching. She set up Mynd Works in 2020 and since then has provided either in-person or Zoom appoint- ments depending on COVID-19 guidelines and the level of comfort of her patients. After a rst evaluation, Bolles gathers data including questionnaires for depression, anxiety, social anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, bipolar and ADHD based on patient complaints. She also takes in previous history and treatment goals. The next step is an electroencephalogram, which measures brainwave activity. The recorded activity is then compared to other patients through a psychiatric evaluation to anticipate how the patient will respond to medications, Bolles said.” Mynd Works partners with GeneSight for genetic testing. This generates a report that shows how the body metabolizes medications. Based on these results, a thorough evaluation and follow-up appointments, Bolles works out the kinds and levels of medications and makes recommendations. She partners with therapists and physicians. “So as crazy as it sounds, you may get three dif- ferent diagnoses and three dierent recommended medications because it’s trial and error. So, what this is designed to do is minimize trial and error,” Bolles said. BY SUMAIYA MALIK
