County’s new unit proactively ghts narcotics cases
BY MARK FADDEN & MIRANDA JAIMES
The Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Oce launched a new narcotics unit in November, which has indicted its rst fentanyl murder charge. Jacob Lindsay’s indictment came Dec. 14 after the death of Brandon Harrison, who overdosed on fen- tanyl, per a news release. This is the county’s rst fentanyl murder case. “It’s just so sad that this is what we’re dealing with,” Criminal District Attorney Phil Sorrells said. “We’re losing our kids to this. We want to do everything that we can to keep our community safe.” The new unit works in tandem with the existing Tarrant County Sheri’s Department Narcotics Unit. Ocials said narcotics have become more widely available in the county, and the district attorney’s oce is expected to receive around 8,500 drug cases this year. The unit gives the department a proactive approach to investigations, ocials said. “The Criminal District Attorney’s Oce recent formation of a Narcotics Unit dedicated to targeting fentanyl, methamphetamine, and other illegal drug dealers is a crucial step in safe- guarding Tarrant County residents,” County Judge Tim O’Hare said.
Since 2022, Grapevine and Southlake police have made 15 arrests for fentanyl possession. In 2022, Tarrant County also had the sixth highest fentanyl mortality rate in the state, per data from Texas Vital Statistics. Ocials say the Tarrant County Courthouse could handle hundreds of drug cases this year.

Keller park playground construction begins Work is underway at The Parks at Town Center near The Keller Pointe to replace a playground there, according to Keller city ocials. The park is located at 1100 Bear Creek Parkway. The details The $150,000 playground project will feature three play areas, multiple slides and shade cano- pies. Money for the project comes from the Keller Development Corporation, which receives a half- cent of the community’s sales tax revenue to use exclusively on parks and recreation capital projects, according to city ocials. Work on the park is expected to be completed in February, ocials said. Ocials said the replacement is a part of the city commitment to replace playgrounds that have reached the end of their useful life.

Board approves 2024-25 and 2025-26 calendars After receiving input from staff and the commu- nity, Northwest ISD board members approved both the 2024-25 and 2025-26 instructional calendars. The details Feedback on two calendar options, titled Option A and Option B, was given by a school calendar committee and by the community at large. To get community input, NISD officials created a survey. During her presentation to the board at the Dec. 11 meeting, Stephanie Espinosa, executive director of teaching and learning, said in that survey, Option A was chosen by an “overwhelming” 89%. Staff recommended Option A at the Dec. 11 board meeting, and the board approved that option on Jan. 8. Espinosa said the 2025-26 calendar is subject to change should state officials make changes to testing dates.
New member fills vacant Place 7 seat Keller ISD board members voted unani- mously to appoint Heather Washington to fill the vacant Place 7 seat Jan. 3. The backstory The Place 7 seat was held by Ruthie Keyes, who recently resigned after walking out of a Dec. 11 board meeting. “We’re happy to have Ms. Washington serve on the Keller ISD board of trustees,” Board President Charles Randklev said. “Our district is at a critical time, and this board needs a complete board [with] seven members to weigh in and help the district and the new superintendent navigate these issues as we move forward.” Washington said that she’s excited, honored and humbled to be appointed.

Keller council amends contract for Johnson Road construction
Keller City Council approved a contract amend- ment Dec. 19 for the Johnson Road Reconstruction Project that will keep the work on schedule. The amendment was to the city’s contract with Teague Nall and Perkins of Fort Worth. The details Additional funding was required because the original construction inspection eort estimate from 2018 did not account for the project’s high- er-than-normal resident interaction and coordina- tion, said Rachel Reynolds, communication and public engagement manager for the city. This amendment will provide for the continua- tion of construction inspections through the end of construction. The amendment cost was $90,000, a council agenda memo stated. Construction on Johnson is ongoing and remains on schedule for completion this summer, Reynolds said.

County's new unit proactively fights narcotics cases
What’s happening?
Overdose mortality rates The death toll from all drug overdoses in Tarrant County has seen a significant rise since 2019. Data for 2021 and 2022 is preliminary.
A closer look drug overdoses were reported in Tarrant County in 2023 as of Nov. 20, mainly from fentanyl. 2,500
people in Tarrant County have died from overdoses in 2023 as of Nov. 20. 300+
The new narcotics unit is staffed with three experienced prosecutors who will “diligently pursue drug cases and work closely with law enforcement agencies,” a news release stated. House Bill 6 passed in 2023 and allows prosecutors to file a murder charge for anyone involved in distributing fentanyl to a person who dies from exposure to the drug. Assistant District Attorney Michael Ferry, one of the members of the Narcotics Unit, said he’s seen firsthand the impact of dangerous drugs. “Especially [during the holidays], it’s very difficult for the families who have lost a loved one,” he said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states pharmaceutical fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that may be prescribed for pain treatment. “We are going to get the people who sell this poison off the streets,” Sorrells said in a statement. “Fentanyl is addictive and deadly.”

In March, the U.S. Food and Drug Adminis- tration approved Narcan for over-the-counter use/sale. Narcan is a 4-milligram naloxone nasal spray that can be used to reverse drug overdoses. Police officers in Keller, Roanoke and Fort Worth carry Narcan, and have been trained to administer it, officials said. In addition, school resource officers at Keller ISD and Northwest ISD also carry it. Local school resource officers are also working to educate students about the dangers of fentanyl, officials with Northwest ISD and Keller ISD said. "As of late, Narcan administrations seem to be going down in our community, said Rachel Reynolds, Keller's communication and public engagement manager. "We hope that is the result of enforcement and education and that we see that trend continue in the right direction."
Illegal drugs are cheaper than they’ve ever been, Tarrant County Sheriff Bill Waybourn said. That causes the issue to be more widespread across the county. “Fentanyl knows no boundaries,” he said. “It’s in our gated communities, in our inner cities, it doesn’t matter. It’s finding its way everywhere.” Waybourn said his officers also carry Narcan or have it in their vehicles.
The new unit will create a more coordinated effort to combat the use of narcotics in the county, officials said. “[This unit] can help piece some things together that [police] are working on ... and get these criminals off our streets,” Sorrells said. The county also provides information about how to recognize and respond to an overdose in progress.

5 new fitness facilities come to local area Several new fitness-focused facilities opened in Keller, Roanoke and north Fort Worth in 2023, with one more opening just around the corner in 2024. These new facilities offer a wide range of work- out opportunities. “A dad brought his daughter in to begin training, and we invited him to train with us,” said Jean Petrik, owner of Alliance Jiu Jitsu Fort Worth. “He lost 40 pounds in three months.”

Weitzman’s Bob Young talks growth in workout- focused businesses Throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area, an influx of workout-focused businesses are opening, many of them having moved into what were vacant spaces. Bob Young, executive managing director of real estate company Weitzman, spoke with Community Impact about the reasons his company has seen growth in the real estate market. To what could you attribute the growth in workout-focused businesses? There’s two moving parts. On the consumer side, with the pandemic—health and wellness was re-energized and took a new look. Once the masks were off that morphed into almost a cultural kind of thing—going to the gym with other people and looking good. And then take the real estate side.
Vacancies that were created by [the] closing of major retailers, these gyms realized that that could be fertile for them to go get memberships and be in the markets where rooftops were there and customers were there. How much has the perception of gyms changed? In the past they were looked at like, “We don’t think we want them in a shopping center,” based on restrictions that maybe a grocery store had on parking. Now, they drive people to shopping centers. They became kind of their own anchor, along with Target or Kroger or whatever is there. In the past, it seemed like big-box vacancies would stay vacant for a long time, but it sounds like that is changing now? That is totally accurate. That’s exactly what’s happened. If you have to divide [the space] and put two tenants in there, that’s expensive. So many of these gyms, because they had a larger footprint, they were able to get the benefit of not subdividing space. All of a sudden, they’re everywhere. I don’t think that they’re going to slow down anytime soon.
