bridges and pedestrian areas. Construction on Segment 2 is not slated to begin until 2028 at the earliest. Meanwhile, work in downtown will involve removing the Pierce Elevated, an elevated portion of I-45 that connects drivers to Downtown roadways. As I-45 is rerouted along I-10, the Pierce Elevated will be replaced with connector ramps, according to TxDOT information.
TxDOT officials said they hope to start construction this fall on the first subproject, which involves drainage work along I-69 in Downtown Houston near the George R. Brown Convention Center.
