HOUSING DEMAND As the need for housing in P ugerville and Hutto increases rapidly, city o cials and developers are working to bring more units to the area.

Local population growth drives up demand for new housing options At one point in mid-December, a time of the year when demand for homes usually slows down, there were 20 o ers on one resale home in Hutto, according to local Realtor Katie Evans. The unusually high number of o ers at a time when experts say demand tends to fall is indicative of an emerging challenge in the area—as P ugerville and Hutto continue to see strong pop- ulation growth, the supply of housing must keep up, Evans said. “I’m honestly a little scared of what the spring is going to bring us, because things have not slowed down to the degree I would expect,” Evans said. In order to accommodate the two- pronged problem of rapidly rising pop- ulation in combination with substantial increases in housing costs, area o cials and developers are working to bulk up the number of housing units avail- able for residents as well as continue diversifying options for housing. From single-family rental homes to apartments, condos and duplexes, housing units and options in P uger- ville and Hutto are growing, but local o cials and developers are not certain the e orts will keep pace with demand. In keeping with rapid development and population growth in P ugerville, o cials are continuing to pushmajor transportation projects throughout the city forward in 2022. As part of a $101.7 million 2020 general obligation transportation bond, city sta are working to advance street overhauls, improvements and realignments. During a late November City Council meeting, sta updated o cials on the progress of those projects.
